Adam tablet was first introduced in CES 2010 and created much hype and expectations because of the string hardware spec it has, and was earlier expected to launch in June/July of 2010. But then it got delayed and created lot of frustration among the users. But now the time has come .. Notion Ink is now ready for big time, big launch .. yes its none other than Adam Launch in this December or Jan 2011.

Where it started from – Post by Rohan - Read More
I still remember my dreams of actually landing on Mars! Life is too harsh. It stole my childhood dreams. As a kid I was unaware of destiny. Unaware of work to live concept. Thought, that everyone can be happy, learn whatever they want. And may be this is where I was nurturing this dream.
Doesn’t matter if I am not able to realize my dreams. I can do something for everyone else out there. Do something for a kid to learn music, challenge gravity. Let students see reactions, smile in awe when they look at such wonderful engineering creations of man. Let engineers test their concepts. And let people like me spend time in communication. One device which can help many without telling them it’s helping. One device which quietly slips into their lives and becomes their best friend. Their personal diary. The window to look at their kids out there in some unknown land.
A device, just to realize dreams!

Think it like this, iPad is still not launched in India, so would we say it has not launched yet! I know we live in a world which is not any more called Post-Cold war era, but a Globalized world, but still you can’t find one company which can launch its product in all the countries at the same time! Or at least we can’t. And if something breaks down, who are you going to call? (And there are more reasons why it is not possible).
So simply put, just hold on! We are on track.
Notion Ink Moved to Bangalore – July 2010 - Read More

Everything in India starts with some sort of Pooja. In the minds of current generations, its a kind of Go-Go permission from the Lords up stairs. Thats our Go-Go seeking for the new facility.
We recently moved to Bangalore with our team, the facility is up and running and we had this small opening ceremony there.
Clarification on Android 3.0 or 2.2 - Read Original Post
I think the last post made you all think that we are considering 3.0 for the first version.
Well the answer is NO. We were discussing not on the software but on the hardware. We want to ensure that it can be upgraded. But here is exactly where the issue might come, since the HW requirements are not fixed.

About the launch dates in countries:
The interest in a certain country is directly proportional to the number of “Application Developer Collaboration Requests” we get from that country. And we can only respect them by launching in their countries earlier. So if you want it to his sooner, come join us! World is not small when it comes to shipping, but we will try to reach wherever you are, and online shopping is the best option.
Hint about Adam 2
Coming back on pricing, we want is cheap as well. I don’t think profit is in hardware. It lies in the ecosystem. And when the best hardware can be clubbed with a massive eco-system, you are talking about a revolution. There are unusual barriers in hardware which will not allow anyone to reduce prices below a certain level. Reason I think is, as soon as a component hits large-scale manufacturing to become cheaper, next generation, better and faster component is available at the same. You probably have noticed this with Apple a lot.
How do we break this? Well we have ideas. But probably I will explain that with Adam 2.
Price Details
Currently we will ship LCD and PQ Variants. Both available in Wi-fi only and 3G modes. I believe you will get a range of around $399 to $498 for these four. (Please remember I haven’t taken the fluctuations, so be little sceptical). We are also working on reducing it further down (let’s leave the good news for the future).
UI Blog – But didn’t happen till now – Rohan is really busy on other things
Andre and I will soon start the UI Blog for you all. You can see and play with the UI there and start understanding how Adam will work. We will convert it into an initiative to design better and better interfaces with you all as the feedback professors.

Announcement of EAP 200 Nos  Read More
Only 200 people will get selected in the Early Access Program (EAP) and there is a lot which they will get in return like:
  • Adam itself! I believe these will be the only people other than our labs who will get access to Adam. More on what all will be there when you register for the upcoming EAP web portal.
  • to get to play a pivotal role in validating the pre-production software
  • full access to the OS and UI which we have developed
  • 24×7 engineering support from Notion Ink (email as well as on phone)
  • other things like: marketing opportunities, etc. will be explained in the program itself
Rohan started Weekend Special  Read More

  1. Provide a Natural Angle of Viewing (else the device is horizontal and will face severe reflections, your hands obstructs more of the screen view and every thing specially test looks like a perspective view instead of straight )
alt
  1. Provide an easy way to hold the device (some devices are there are not there to hold, either too slippery or you don’t have confidence that you can hold it for hours), and
  2. Swivel Camera (which will require a rotating arm and from here the cylindrical area emerged)
  3. Display Width  16:9 vs 4:3
On the left is a device with 4:3 screen ratio. The extra thick edges (generally black as in iPad) are also there. You can observe the huge margin which is there? If you see on the right image with 16:9 ratio, the margins are already provided by the design itself (again black thick edge). I personally don’t see a need of using a screen which is 4:3 unless you can design a product without a thick edge. I wont talk about movies on 4:3 screen cos you all know about that.

  • UI is heavily accelerated and is based on Open GL Engine;
  • It features a very new concept of Multi-tasking which is going to be little different and controversial (soon we will know why)! Adam does multi-tasking in a way none ever has done. Gone are the days when we hold menu button for long to switch apps or windows! (I have a post dedicated on this in coming weeks);
  • It supports full 3D effects;
  • Icons are not glossy and web 2.0-ish as you find on all the current generation of devices;
  • Special Contrasting features have been used to support PQ display;
  • and yes it supports multi-touch.
Eden Introduced  Read More
altEden consists of panels or Light Application instances(side image is just an example). At any moment of time you can work on infinite applications. You will have 3 panels at your disposal and you can switch at any time, and the best part, irrespective of how many and which ever application you run in the panels, the main application is in deep sleep mode. Hence the over-all system is low on memory, extremely fast and optimized.
Clarification on the name – ADAM or adam

Collaboration with LongBox digital
Another announcement which LongBox digital did yesterday was about our collaboration with them. We are getting you the Comics with a very refreshing look and feel (and more content as they have to expand their reach to other publishers as well). And a lot many announcements are yet to come.

Big noise raised up on the screen border (from the last post) and clarification from Rohan followed back - Read Full Story
(As a reference, on iPad (since you have seen it the most) its 22mm on both the sides and its 16mm on Adam, right now it was 22mm which was painted. Final version will look exactly as it is on LongBox Video.)
If you are following this blog, you would realise how much I hate this border! Though it is counter argued that it helps holding it, but then we hold touch phones as well and it doesn’t have any (or very less)! Also explained earlier the reason of still having it is the USBs and other I/O peripherals. We have spent a lot of resources and have more than 9 patents on the same (to reduce it)! But the fabs and vendors need to upgrade to accomplish what we want (essentially Adam 2 :) )
Notion Ink Logo Context - Read More
We have got 26,888 votes on the color option! Thanks for your support!
There is one more area where we can work together. I have gone through some 100s of different logos, but havent find one which can really bring excitement. Logo of a company is like the company itself and saves the history of its nature when a new one replaces the older one. Every company you know, have done at least one change in its identity.

Loud Speakers:
I am also a musician (I play guitar and mouth-organ). And since starting it was extremely important for us to get the best sound to come out from Adam. And we think Adam has the best sound when compared to any tablet out there! You can easily watch movies on it without using any other speaker (that would mean that now more than one can enjoy the Media on the device if you are not closer to your home theater and it’s really important) or head phones.
Most of the small speakers falls in the category of syndrome called “No Bass Man!”. In simple words they have good treble but bass is just not there! You can generalize that small speakers will not have good response below 200Hz (it’s not manufacturing or speaker quality issue, there is a lot of physics and surface area properties involved). We have tried to resolve this problem by designing better speaker enclosure and using the body of the Adam itself as the resonator!

Battery:
The most power hogging elements on Adam are (in decreasing order) LCD, Wi-Fi, 3G, Speakers (in full power mode) and then CPU (Tegra). I am getting from more than 2 full days to minimum of 15 hours (on average which will some idle time as well) ! I am thinking of posting an interactive chart where you all can fill in details of how you will use it and then get the usage value out! Tegra consumes nothing for Open GL so it’s definitely a paradise for Gamers. I have seldom seen it crossing its 60-70mW line (idle) and touching 200-400mW for heavy usage. Adam has 24Whr, and you are bound to be extremely happy with its battery performance. On a comparison, iPad (couldn’t find other device to write here) has 25Whr, and gives you around 11-12 hour. On similar calculations Adam has 24Whr battery and consumers around 1.2Whr (on similar tests as mentioned on their website) and ended up giving 24/1.2=20 hours. (That’s why I want to develop that interactive chart which you can use and see yourself).

USBs

Its real fun and time saver to watch 1080p movies, videos, etc. (on device as reduced 1024 or on 48″ LCD TV, full 1080p via HDMI) directly from the USB without actually transferring it into the memory of Adam!
See an old image of Adam here. 2 quick USB connections and your keyboard and mouse are alive! Tablets are supposed to be independent devices. Not requiring a MASTER (PC) to get data from, get songs from, etc. And hence I/O ports are extremely important.
Clarification on Battery Usage - How to discharge your Adam with-in 6 hours? - Drain Yourself
    • Play 1080P continuously with full brightness and at full volume (displayed as 1024 on Adam and not via HDMI to TV) (no idle time) (Adam has BIG speakers)
    • Play YouTube Flash videos on Wi-Fi or 3G network (no idle time)
    • Use Streaming 3D maps on 3G network with GPS
    • Record HD Video and stream it over the Wi-fi networks
    • Play an augmented reality 3D game with camera input over the network (wi-fi of 3G)

Browser and Panel Read More
We wanted speed. Speed of switching, closing, opening the closed tab, and closing all in multiple and that through our thick fingers. This is what we have come up with:

Tab System
Internally we keep on fighting to push one system or the other. One team would think theirs is the best idea and other the same. But the best results and options comes from our very special Usability Team which will test all the feature, measure the reactions and easy and then report which path to go!
The Panels
These images will first be previewed by those who get the EAP and the SDK access. To make the UI development seamless and easy, we have converted our ideation into guidelines. Here is an example:
The more on how to design seamless interaction will get covered in the “UI Blog” which we mentioned.
EAP2 – 200 More people will be allowed in EAP2 - Read More
  • Little about the EAP results. We had far too many entries from such brilliant companies and individuals that it wasn’t making sense that we limit the EAP to only 200 people. Hence we have extended it to more. So now there is EAP 1 and EAP 2 where we have 200 in the first one and around 200 more in the next one.
  • In the EAP 2 we have around 46 countries! EAP was multi pronged test for us. Production Validation, Logistics (handling shipments, etc. for so many countries), test of the support system, work on the feedback before it reaches masses (ones which we can quickly fix) and sending out messages to all that we have arrived! (Interestingly India is missing from the EAP 1, but has its presence all over the EAP 2 selections)

Update on Logo: Where is the logo? One of our friend sent us, a Company registration page where he found similar logo. It is impossible that the winner had seen it before, but the similarity couldn’t be denied and we had to contact this firm for their confirmation that they are fine with us using a selected logo. They havent replied since then and we are still waiting (our legal team is completely against using it, cos its too similar, but if we can get permission from this firm then they have no issue).
Mail’d: Right now it comes with all the default features you expect from it, plus better “Missing attachments”, “offline mode”, and “UNDO a sent email” feature.
Sniffer:
An extremely fast and handy File Browser is a must (especially if you are talking about USB drives, bluetooth etc). Personally I don’t like syncing my device every time I need to show someone a presentation or an image or even to listen a new song, may be I need more freedom in how I access and use my data. And hence we have the ‘Sniffer’ (Murali is the Architect of this one), as shown in the image on your right (please remember, I cannot share the final images, else my investors, design and legal teams will kill me! :) ) There is a preview mode as well which works well for most of the important formats. I/O port detection is automatic and fast, and it goes well with the 3 panel layout system.
Why Matt Finish explained: Read more
We told you how much we love Matt (that’s one reason why all the monitors here are from Dell). We have invested a lot of time in figuring out the right surface values which gives the perfect combination of 2 worlds (no reflection property of matt and scratch resistant property of glossy surface). But the first questions: “Why every other device we see is Glossy and not matt?” The answer lies in the surface property.
